Letters to Lilly (Lessons in Leadership & Loving Yourself) sits at the intersection of leadership and personal development. An anthology of letters to a younger self collected from around the world, these letters share poignant memories and lessons that will inspire readers of all ages and backgrounds. This book aims to spread the message that so many of us share the same struggles, challenges, and opportunities regardless of where we sit in the world. We are all stronger and more resilient than we realize, and that inner fortitude is something that will carry us through difficult times. The idea of loving yourself is too often overlooked; we can be our own harshest critic when we should be our own greatest ally. And most importantly, it is meant to serve as a reminder that "you are not alone."

Book Reading Third Place Books - Seward Park

Shams’ story begins in Bangladesh under the care of a neglectful mother and family members who turn a blind eye to what happens to her because of that neglect. Once the family has immigrated to the United States, thousands of miles from her abuser and those who looked the other way, Shams is safe. But she’ll learn that trauma has a way of living under the skin, of still shaping everything from her sense of self to her relationships.

Shams has written a singular story about surviving a childhood filled with traumas no one should have to endure, and digging past decades of pain, shame, and self-loathing to discover the human being worthy of life and love beneath them.
